Who We Are

Joshua 24:15 - 'Choose for yourself this day whom  you will serve...as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.'

My name is Craig Carlson and I am a Vietnam veteran.  I served in the United States Navy from 1971 'til 1974 on board two different destroyers: The USS Warrington which was decomissioned due to combat damage sustained in the Gulf of Tonkin, and the USS Glennon. I have been married to my wife for almost 40 years. She has remained by my side even with everything I have gone through.  I consider her to be my 'veteran'.

Like many of you, I have suffered with varying degrees of PTSD over the years since my military service.  I struggled with substance abuse, found it hard to stay in one place, to hold a job for any length of time. I distanced myself from family, friends, and even God Himself.  But He wasn't ready to let me stray too far.

In 1988 while living in NH, my wife had heard about a Vietnam Veterans conference that was being sponsored by Point Man International Ministries and  it was to be held in Virginia Beach at the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) facility. She asked me if I would be interested in attending and I promptly said 'NO. I don't need that _____'. She dropped the subject.  In 1989 Point Man was holding their second conference, and she asked me again. We had just moved from NH to Upstate NY and  I had  started  a new job.  I said 'Maybe but I don't think I can get the time off.'  She didn't push.  In 1990 they were holding their third annual conference and when she asked if I would be interested, something stirred inside of me and I KNEW I was supposed to be there. Funds were tight and I had just had surgery but I gave CBN a call to see if it was possible. They told me there was scholarship money available for the hotel and the conference, I just had to get there.  We pulled all our pennies together and had just enough to pay for the flight.

What I learned and experienced during that weekend was life changing.  When I came home, my wife didn't know what to do with me-she didn't know how to react.  Our wives learn how to react to our moods and outbursts...I had changed so drastically that she had to re-learn how to react to me, and rather than react, to respond to me.  She was very pleased with the new me...and intrigued to find out more about what had happened to transform me so dramatically.  We both were able to go to the fourth conference in 1991 and from that time we have had a heart to minister to veterans and their wives.  That was 25 years ago.

Believe me when I say these past 25 years have been interesting. There have been many curve balls thrown at us and many trials, but God is faithful.  We were told that it could take 25 years to get a ministry like this up and running, and here we are., ready and willing to go.
